About WJGA

Our Credo

At Washington Junior Golf, we are dedicated to supporting junior golfers by providing a comprehensive, competitive program which helps build character and sportsmanship, providing lifelong benefits.

History of WJGA

In the beginning, there were four . . .

Early in fall of 1976, Ron Hoetmer, Virginia (Mrs. Cal) Scarff, Randy Puetz, and Joan Teats came up with a plan for a junior golf program in the State of Washington.  Oregon had one, so why not Washington?  At that time the San Diego Junior Golf Association was going well, so we copied some of its ideas, making some changes to suit the geography of our state.  The high school district boundaries were used as guidelines with the help of Jim Sulenes, the Curtis High School golf coach.  Before too long, our plan began to take wings! So what do I do?  What's the rule book say?  Is this a one-stroke or two-stroke penalty?  The rules of golf can be very confusing, and sometimes frustrating, and we've all been there - right?  And yet without them, we wouldn't have a sport that maintains such a high degree of integrity and quality to it.  Golfers all over the world know that other golfers are like them, and playing by the same set of rules.  This feeling creates a bond of fellowship, universal spirit, and a level playing field.

We at WJGA are so blessed to have Paul Lucien, our State Rules Chairman, and his dedicated and talented team of rules officials keeping this integrity and quality alive for us.  They teach, interpret, and enforce the rules to prepare our junior golfers to be more confident as they compete because they know and play by the rules.  So Paul, and your terrific team, a huge THANK YOU for your endless support, generous service, and friendly professionalism in maintaining the spirit of this great game for us.

From the Executive Director

Thank you to all of the parents and others who volunteer their time to do the work that makes WJGA one of the best junior golf programs in the country.

Our tournament year was completed in fine fashion with an outstanding State Championship hosted by District 6.  Tournament Director, Jennifer von Doehren, did a fabulous job in running a successful schedule in her district, AND still finding time and energy to conduct a great State Championship in Kent.

We look forward to another great year in 2013, with the State Championship being held in Dupont for the first time, hosted by the District 3 team.
