About WJGA

Our Credo

At Washington Junior Golf, we are dedicated to supporting junior golfers by providing a comprehensive, competitive program which helps build character and sportsmanship, providing lifelong benefits.

History of WJGA

In the beginning, there were four . . .

Early in fall of 1976, Ron Hoetmer, Virginia (Mrs. Cal) Scarff, Randy Puetz, and Joan Teats came up with a plan for a junior golf program in the State of Washington.  Oregon had one, so why not Washington?  At that time the San Diego Junior Golf Association was going well, so we copied some of its ideas, making some changes to suit the geography of our state.  The high school district boundaries were used as guidelines with the help of Jim Sulenes, the Curtis High School golf coach.  Before too long, our plan began to take wings! Another tremendous year for WJGA!!!  Our terrific staff and fabulous volunteers conducted 38 tournaments, and created wonderful opportunities for our young competitive athletes to perform, learn life skills, make friends, and enjoy themselves.  Our graduates continue to learn and grow as 98 played college golf in the state of Washington and many more did so around the country.

We are so grateful for the overwhelming support provided by our volunteers, parents, and sponsors - you are AWESOME!!!

Our two graduates that spoke at the state banquet emphasized their valuable learnings while a WJGA participant and characterize a valuable principle: the process is often more important than the product.

Golfers are instructed to focus in the present, fine tune their skills/processes/routines, and let the outcomes take of themselves.  Easier said than learned for most.  The nurturing of excellence and recognizing its value is a responsibility we take seriously.  Each year we marvel at the improved skill, the joy of the pursuit, and the satisfactions of fulfilling more of their potential.

Enjoy the journey.

From the Executive Director

In thanking our volunteers we sometimes overlook the loyal rules officials who play such a key role at our tournaments.  Our special thanks go to Don Fossum, our state rules chairman, who also acts as the rules chair in District 3 and as our state tournament coordinator.

The rules teams are directed in the other districts by: District 1, Mark Merryman; District 2, Ed Lockner; District 3, Don Fossum; District 4, Annette Cook; District 5, Susan Prugh; District 6, Mike Peluso.

Susan Prugh has been named to the USGA Girls' Championship Committee, and we congratulate her on this recognition of her many contributions to junior golf.

We look forward to a great 2008 season and a wonderful State Championship from July 30-August 1 in Spokane.
