Luke's Legacy

Annual Tournament Scholarship Fund LJ 61 Award Organ Donations

On July 29, 2002, Washington Junior Golf tragically lost a fine young man, talented golfer, and close friend, Luke Johnson. Luke, who started his WJGA career at the age of 8, was an avid, accomplished golfer, who epitomized the ideals of sportsmanship and grace.

Luke suffered serious injuries when his car was hit by an oncoming vehicle near the Twin Lakes Shopping Center in Federal Way. Sadly, the injuries Luke sustained proved to be fatal. But even through his own tragedy, Luke found a way to give back to his community. Due to his foresight, his healthy organs were donated to five grateful recipients.

The week before the accident, Luke was in Spokane attending the 26th annual WJGA State Championship. As usual, he made an impressive showing, finishing 2nd at the Tournament. On Day 1 of the Championship, he shot his personal best, and the best WJGA score ever recorded at a WJGA State Championship, shooting a 61.
That WJGA record still stands today.

To honor Luke and the contributions he made to both Washington Junior Golf Association and his community alike, the Luke's Legacy Scholarship Golf Tournament was created and is now held annually at Twin Lakes Golf Club.

Also, the Luke's Legacy Scholarship Fund was created to support junior golfers with college scholarships.

In addition, the LJ61 award is presented each year to the girl and boy who shoots the best single day score in the 14-17 year old age divisions at the WJGA State Championship.
