WJGA COVID-19 UPDATE – 5/27
*UPDATED* May 27, 2020 – WJGA COVID-19 Statement
The Washington Junior Golf Association has announced a revised summer tournament calendar due to the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.
Given the ongoing developments and regulations put forth by the state of Washington and CDC, WJGA has decided to cancel all Sub-District tournaments for 2020. A full refund will be issued back to the credit card used to register for each tournament. Please allow 5-7 business days for the refund.
This was a very difficult decision to make as golf is widely seen as an activity that is viable and relatively low risk, but after several discussions with industry partners and state leaders it is not realistic that we will be in a position, or in some circumstances allowed, to conduct tournaments on an equitable basis across the state beginning in a few weeks. With various counties in different phases of reopening, and the safety of our members, volunteers, staff and host facilities being our top priority, it is our belief that this is the only appropriate decision at this time.
With the cancelation of all Sub-Districts, the WJGA district season will begin at District Championships this July. The District Championship will now be an open event for every member of the district to sign-up for directly without having to qualify through a Sub-District. District Championships will be held on the dates/venues currently posted and no changes have been made.
District Championship registration will begin on Monday, June 1st at 9am.
The Western Open has also been rescheduled once again to Monday-Tuesday, July 13-14 and will be for 14-18 year olds only this year. This again was a difficult decision, but with the cancelation of numerous national & regional events, and the limited opportunity for exposure to build a college resume, we felt this was the best decision for this year. All 8-11 and 12-13 year olds currently signed up will be given a full refund for the Western Open.
The WJGA is also excited to announce the creation of two new events this summer:
Due to the cancelation of the high school golf season, the WJGA has created a one-time event for high school team members to register as a 3-person boy or girl team for the new WJGA School Team Championship. This event will be held on Thursday, July 16th at Port Ludlow and the format will be aggregate total gross score for the team in boys and girls divisions. Team members must be from the same high school (graduating seniors and incoming freshman are ok) and the team entry fee will be $150 ($50 per player).
Also, due to the cancelation of all travel team events this summer (Junior Americas Cups, Hogan Cup and NPJL Team Matches) the WJGA has created a new district team event this year named the WJGA Cup. This event will feature the top-2 point earning boys and girls from each district playing as a 4-person team. There will be two 18-hole rounds counting the best 3 of 4 scores from each team for each round to name the district team champions. It will be held at Three Lakes GC in Wenatchee with practice rounds being held Saturday, August 29th and 36-holes being played on Sunday, August 30th. Teams will be selected based on the points list at the conclusion of the Eastern Open and there will be no entry fee for this event.
To recap, the WJGA season will look as follows:
July 13-14 – Western Open (14-18 year olds only), Capitol City GC
July 16th – WJGA School Team Championship – Port Ludlow
July 20-21 – District 2 Championship, Willows Run – Coyote Creek
July 20-21 – District 3 Championship, Eagles Pride
July 20-21 – District 4 Championship, Sun Willows & Columbia Point
July 20-21 – District 5 Championship, Palouse Ridge
July 21-22 – District 1 Championship, Sudden Valley
July 22-23 – District 6 Championship, High Cedars
July 27-29 – State Match Play, High Cedars
August 5-7 – State Championship, Manito, Hangman Valley, Esmeralda
August 14-15 – Players Open, Indian Canyon
August 22-23 – Eastern Open, Veterans Memorial
August 29-30 – WJGA Cup, Three Lakes
