John Schroeder, Longtime WJGA Volunteer & Friend of Golf Passes
John Schroeder, known for his longtime commitment and volunteer efforts with multiple golf organizations, passed away on September 27.
John was an expert level Rules of Golf referee, who was a fixture at WJGA District 5 events and statewide events held in Eastern Washington. John was also a committee member for the USGA Junior Amateur Championship and a WA Golf Executive Committee member.
John kept giving back to the game until the very end. In mid-September, John organized a small golf tournament featuring eight PGA Golf Professionals from the Spokane area for a match-play competition held at Kalispel Golf and Country Club. He named the event, “Giving Back to the Game.”
The eight PGA Golf Professionals were divided into two teams, each playing in a singles match. Points earned from these matches would contribute to their respective team’s score.
John had everything organized, and even had a team of dedicated volunteers to assist with bunker raking and live scoring. As the day concluded, John delivered a remarkable presentation and distributed awards to the professionals and the various associations receiving donations. It was, without a doubt, a day filled with inspiration and heartfelt emotions.
John put up the purse and donations himself and during the awards presentation, he presented significant donations to four notable organizations: Washington Golf Foundation, First Tee of Inland Empire, PGA Inland Empire Section, and the Washington Junior Golf Association.
The event was covered by the local community with an article in the Spokesman Review and a local news segment on TV. Click here to read the article in the Spokesmen Review, and Click here to watch the TV news segment.
Thank you John, WJGA salutes you for the lasting impact you have made on the game.
